Committee asks for extension of 6th Schedule

IMPHAL, Aug 24: The Public Monitoring Committee of Tamenglong district has appealed to the state government to take up measures for the extension of 6th Schedule to restore the ADC Act, 2000, to end the ongoing agitation before the situation gets aggravated.

A release of the committee said that the leaders of the state should work for equal development of both hills and valleys. The development of only one region of the state cannot be termed as the development of the whole state, it said.

The state government should really work for the development of the whole state keeping in view the promises made in the election manifestos. All other demands for the inclusion of Manipuri language under the 8th Schedule, establishment of Nagar Panchayat under the 11th Schedule and that of Municipal Councils under the 12th Schedule have been fulfilled by the government but the demand for 6th Schedule in the state has gone unheard for the last many years, it stated.

The release also said that the state government should chalk out measures to narrow down the rift between the hills and valleys by enacting the 6th Schedule in the hill areas of the state. It also demanded the state government to remove the “wanted” tag from the leaders of ANSAM and UNC.
