Nuclear energy prospects mulled at seminar

IMPHAL, Aug 28: A national seminar on the topic “Atomic Energy for Peace, Power and Prosperity” organized by Indian Nuclear Society and Department of Physics, Manipur University, was held today at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University, Canchipur.

The inaugural session of the seminar was graced by Dr. S. Kailash, Director of Physics Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, Dr. RK Gartia, Dean, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Manipur University, Dr. RK Singh, Secretary of Indian Nuclear Society, and Dr. T. Mukherjee, Director of Chemistry Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

Addressing the gathering at the inaugural function, Dr. RK Singh stated that India can become a superpower only when it has got sufficient amount of energy. Nuclear science has been developed for the purpose of generating more energy in the country, he noted.

The AEPPP seminar would definitely help to impart the constructive role of nuclear science to the young people, especially students and research scholars. The scientists are also very much concerned to bring all round development in the country through the use of nuclear technology, Dr. Singh asserted.

During the technical session, many eminent scientists and researchers delivered lectures on varied topics related to nuclear science.

The lecturers of today’s seminar were Dr. Asopa, Head of Nuclear Medicine Centre, BARC, on the topic “Overview of Nuclear Medicine and PET”, Dr. BN Jagatap, Head of AMPD, BARC, on the topic “Laser Physics and Technology: From Basic Research to Nuclear Technologies”, Dr. T. Mukherjee, Director of Chemistry Group, BARC, on the topic “Nuclear Radiation: Its Societal Application”, RK Singh, Scientist F, AERB, BARC, on the topic “Regulatory Control on the Safe Use of Radioactive Sources in India”, and Dr. GS Okram, Scientist, UGC-DAE Consortium, Indore, on the topic “UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research: Fostering Academia for Prosperity through Atomic Energy”.

A large number of students from various schools and colleges of the state including PG and research students of Manipur University participated in the seminar.
