Tumbling stones stop traffic on NH-53

Imphal, Aug 24: Traffic along the NH-53 was disrupted today for several hours with huge boulders blocking the path after they were brought down by a massive erosion.

The disruption occurred at Lower Seijang village about 38 km away from Imphal along the NH-53.

Eye witnesses said that the erosion started since early morning today around 6am bringing down massive stones completely blocking the road, about 35 feet wide.

Prompt action by officials of the state government and BRO on receiving immediate information enabled clearance to be taken up to make the route accessible, added the witnesses.

During the clearance work the BRO besides using excavator used bombs in order to break the huge stones blocking the route. Later in the evening light vehicles were able to pass through the route.

The clearance work continued at war footing till the filing of this report to enable a convoy of about 200 loaded trucks coming from Jiribam to pass through the route.
