Kongbam Ibeyaima’s folk tales bag Sahitya Akademi award for Children’s literature

    NEW DELHI, Sep 24: Ngathem Ningol Kongbam Ongbi Ibeyaima’s folk tales- Sorarengee Machanupi Atonbee Leimashang Amasung Atei Phunga Wareeshing in Manipuri was among the most outstanding books for children published in 24 Indian languages recognized by the Sahitya Akademi selected for the Sahitya Akademi Award for Children Literature (Bal Sahitya Puraskar) for 2010.
    One book of folk tales, two books of poetry, six short stories, seven of novels, one play, one travelogue and five writers for their total contribution to children literature were selected for the awards newly instituted by the Sahitya Akademi from this year, according to the Sahitya Akademi. The award for the children literature in Sanskrit will be announced on Saturday.
    Other awardees are Gagan Chandra Adhikari(Assamese), Saral De (Bengali), Nabin Malla Boro (Bodo), Gianeshwar (Dogri), Mini Srinivasan (English), Yashwant Mehta (Gujarati), Prakash Manu (Hindi), Boluvaru Mohammad Kunhi (Kannada), S. Razi(Kashmiri), Prakash S. Pariekar (Konkani), Tara Nand Viyogee (Maithili), Sippi Pallippuram (Malayalam), Anil Awachat(Marathi), Naina Singh Yonzan(Nepali), Punyaprabha Devi (Oriya), Jasbir Bhullar (Punjabi), Damyanti Jadawat Chanchal (Rajasthani), Bouyha Biswanath Tudu(Santhali), Khiman U.Mulani (Sindhi), Ma. Kamalavelan(Tamil), Kaluvakolanu Sadananda(Telegu) and Ghulam Haider(Urdu).
    The awards were recommended by distinguished jury members representing 24 Indian languages and approved by the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi which met on August 20 last at Goa .
    The awards were considered for the children books first published during the five years immediately preceding the year of award i.e. between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2008.  The books and writers for total contribution were selected on the basis of recommendations made by a jury of three members in the concerned languages in accordance with the procedure laid down for the purpose. According to the procedure, the Executive Board declared the awards on the basis of unanimous selections made by the jurors or selection made on the basis of majority vote.
    The Award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs. 50, 000/- will be presented to the awardees at a special function to be held at Meghdoot Theatre, Copernicus Marg here on November 14. On the next day, there will be an Authors’ Meet at the Auditorium of Sahitya Akademi.
    Born on November 8, 1937 at Singjamei Makha Sorokhaibam Leikai, Kongbam Ibeyaima was the last daughter of Late Ngathem Gulap and Late Sorokhaibam Ningol Tomcha. She was the wife of Late Kongbam Iboyaima of Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal. Her first folk tales- Umaibee  Amasung Atei Phunga Wareeshing published by the Kongbam Communication Centre in 2004 received Telem Ongbi Atoibemma Award for Children Literature 2009 instituted by the Naharol Sahitya Premee Samity. She is a member of the Writers’ Forum, Imphal.
    Her second folk tales- Sorarengee Machanupi Atonbee Leimashang Amasung Atei Phunga Wareeshing published by the Writers Forum Imphal in September 2008 contains 20 folk tales and has also been selected for the Asangbam Minaketan Angang Nawa Sahitya Mana 2010 instituted by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal which is to be presented to the author on the occasion of Platinum Jubilee celebration of the Parishad in November 2010 in Imphal.   Both the folk tales contains a good number of sketches drawn by  Ningombam Oken of Brahmapur Lalji Lakpa Leikai to attract the children.
