IMPHAL, Sep 23: The Khongjom War Memorial Complex has been developed as a mark of paying tribute to the martyrs of Manipur who had made the supreme sacrifice for the sake of motherland in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, stated chief minister O. Ibobi during the inauguration of Khongjom War Memorial Gate held today at Khongjom, Thoubal district.
The chief minister further stated that the Khongjom War Memorial Complex is a very sacred place and hence the state government in coordination with Khongjom War Memorial Trust would make the complex more attractive by chalking out various palns and policies.
Further, he appealed to the people to render utmost help and support in developing the complex and give no resistance to land acquisition if required for the expansion of the complex.
Ibobi has also acclaimed the Khongjom War Memorial Complex as a divine and holy place for the people of the state.
The Khongjom War Memorial Gate inaugurated today has been constructed by the engineering cell of Manipur Development Society at an estimated cost of Rs 98 lakhs under the assistance from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
So far, Rs 252 lakhs out of Rs 382 lakhs have been sanctioned by the Ministry for the development of Khongjom War Memorial Complex which will include construction of approach road, sankritan hall, open air theatre, open plaza, children’s park, water tank, toilet, ghat, bridge from the memorial to plaza and parking area.
The inaugural function was also attended by PHED and tourism minister TN Haokip, works minister K. Ranjit, MLA O. Landhoni, MLA M. Hemanta and MLA Helaluddin Khan.
The chief minister along with other dignataries and general public also paid tarpan (homage) to the departed martyrs of the state today at Khongjom River.
