Houchongba Fair begins at Iboyaima Shanglen

    IMPHAL, Oct 22: The Mera Houchongba Festive Fair-2010 showcasing a variety of artistic handloom and handcraft products of the state kicked off today at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, Imphal.

    The festive fair is being organized by Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers’ and Handicrafts Artisans’ Cooperative Society Limited (AWAS) and it would continue till October 26.

    The inaugural function of the fair was graced by commerce and industries minister Y Erabot, O Nabakishore, principal secretary of commerce and industries department, Joel Luikham, additional RCS, Dr. N Mohendro, advisor AWAS, and  Mutum Churamani, vice-president of HERICOUN as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.

    Addressing the inaugural function, commerce and industries minister, Y Erabot stated that the festive fair which has been organized since 2007 is a platform not only for the promotion of handloom and handicraft products but also for the maintenance of peace and harmony in the state.

    The commerce and industries department has a proposal for establishment of Industrial Growth Centre in the state which will help generate employment for a large number of people in different districts of the state. However, limited availability of land required for the construction of this centre is a major setback. The actual requirement of land for this project is more than 500 acres, he said.
