Life paralysed by militant strike against Merger Agreement

IMPHAL, Oct 15: Normal life in the state was severely affected today on account of the general strike called by some underground organisations to mark their opposition to the signing of the Manipur Merger Agreement between the then King of Manipur and the Government of India in 1949.
While the proscribe RPF called for boycott of day from 1am to 6.30pm, the underground PREPAK called general strike effective from October 14-15 midnght till 7pm today.
Normal life throughout the state particularly in the capital city were severely affected by the strike as no passenger vehicles plied on the road or business establishments opened.
Most of the streets in Imphal looked deserted though there little movement of light vehicles and motorcyles.
There has been no report of untoward incident during the strike period.
The proscribed organization appealed to the people not to venture out of their residence while giving exemption to the essential services, media, medical and religious related matters.
The general strike had paralyzed the state as most people remained indoors and almost all of business establishment remaining closed for the day.
However, today being Bor day, sizeable number of vehicles were seen plying on the Imphal roads leading to Hiyangthang where people used to flock to offer prayer at Hiyangthang Lairembi.
Most of the vehicles plying on the road were seen with either ‘Bor Khoirumba’ or ‘Lai Khourumba’ pasted on windshields.
