IMPHAL Oct 21: Concerned over the failure to take any visible initiative to find out the whereabouts of the chairman of the proscribe UNLF, RK Sanayaima alias Meghen, who was allegedly arrested by the Bangladesh Army recently, members Opposition bench in the state Assembly led by the Leader of the Opposition Radhabinod Koijam have drawn the attentions of the state government to make official confirmation of the news.
In separate comments to the media today various opposition members including Radhabinoid Koijam opposition leader, MLA O. Joy, MLA Dr. Ng. Bijoy, MLA RK Anand have voiced a common opinion that the state government must take initiative to find out the whereabouts of the UNLF chairman.
They lamented that despite extensive reports in the national and state media, there is still no official clarification from both the Centre and the state governments.
They said it is imperative for the government to protect the citizenship rights of RK Sanayaima as he is an Indian citizen.
They questioned the rationale why the Indian government has not clarified or sought clarification on the BBC news report about the arrest of RK. Meghen in Bangladesh, especially because other reports also said Meghen was arrest by a joint team by Indian Intelligent and Bangladesh police force.
Member of the Senior Citizen Forum, Manipur, and also a human right defender, advocate Khaidem Mani Singh also strongly voiced this concern in a meeting with the media today.
He further mentioned that no persons shall be deprived of his rights and liberty except by procedures established by law.
This is enshrined in the Indian constitution in Art 21, he said.
It would be very wrong to deny this constitutional rights and keep the whereabouts of RK Sanayaima obscure from the public after his arrest, he added.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council, and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Manipur State Committee, have demanded the Ministry of Home Affairs to find out the whereabouts of UNLF chief RK Meghen who was reportedly arrested by Bangladesh Police and RAW from Dhaka, in separate press releases.
The Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) also appealed to the concerned authority to trace the missing leader of UNLF, RK Meghen and conduct a trial according to the law of the country rather than make him disappear suddenly, said a release.
