Guwahati, Oct 12 (IANS): Two militants of the outlawed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) of Manipur were arrested Tuesday from a rented accommodation in Assam`s main city of Guwahati, officials said.
A police spokesperson said the two UNLF militants, Jai Singh and Ashok Singh, were arrested from Guwahati`s Panbazar area.
`Based on specific inputs about the presence of the two UNLF militants, we raided a house and arrested the duo,` a police official said.
Police seized several cell phones, laptops, and extortion demand notes from the arrested rebels.
`The duo was here to extort money from businessman having business interests in Manipur,` the official said.
Police are also looking out for some more UNLF militants in Guwahati based on interrogation of the two arrested rebels.
`Guwahati has become a hub for militants from Manipur with most of them sheltered in rented houses in the garb of students or working people to carry out extortion,` the official said.
At least 20 militants from various Manipur-based rebel groups have been arrested from Guwahati in the past six months.
