Zero tillage pea cultivation

    IMPHAL, Oct 31: For the first in Thoubal district, the state agriculture department launched ‘Zero tillage pea cultivation’ at Nongdam, Lourembam, Nongpok Sekmai area in collaboration with the Rural Agriculture and Youth Development Society today. Cultivation is being carried out in about two hectre area on trial basis.

    Speaking to media person during cultivation programme, deputy director Ph Rajendra disclosed that zero tillage cultivation of pea is being taken up for the first time in valley area of the state. He also said that the state agriculture department is targetting to cover about 22 hectres of area for the project.

    He further said that planting of pea need water, but due to lack of irrigation system in Manipur the state agriculture department has taken up some experiments like taking water from morning dew by covering the sowed seed by straw. Covering seed by straw maintain moisture thereby helping pea seeds to grow fast. Rajendro advised farmers not to forget treatment of seed before sowing with chemical.

    Leaders of the Rural Agriculture and Youth Development Society are hopeful of a success in the project as it would inspire farmers of the area to adopt modern method of pea cultivation in future.
