IMPHAL, Nov 15: The students of Adult Continuing Education and Extension (ACEE) Department of Manipur University held a sit-in-protest demonstration today in front of vice-chancellor’s office demanding the Academic Council of Manipur University to revoke the decision for merger of the ACEE Department with the Education Department of Manipur University.

The post-graduate students and research scholars of the department held the protest while the meeting of the Academic Council of Manipur University was going on at vice-chancellor’s office.

One research scholar of the department told IFP that the ACEE Department was first opened in Manipur University in 2003 with PG course and PhD course was later added in 2007. At present the department has full capacity of 20 students in each semester of MA course and more than 20 scholars currently pursuing research works in the department, she said.

The merger or downgradation of the department will only hamper the campaign for adult education which has been taken by the department under total literacy mission. Langthabal Chingkham has been declared as 100 percent literate village owing to the efforts of the students of the department, she asserted.

Meanwhile, a reliable source said that the Academic Council has revoked the decision for merger of ACEE Department with Education Department and further approved to make appointment of necessary teaching staffs for the department.
