IMPHAL, Nov 4: Showing solidarity the entire hosteller of Manipur University, students today joined hand with the agitating ladies hostellers of hostel No.1 (Urerei Hostel) and unanimously decided to boycott the warden and care-taker of hostel No.1.
At the same time classes was disrupted in the entire campus with the days scholars joining the agitating hostellers to submit a memorandum to the vice-chancellor of the Manipur University demanding immediate removal of warden and care-taker and redressal of other grievances.
The memorandum stated that the incident in ladies hostel no.1 on November 3, 2010 was unnecessary and shameful for the whole university community. The incident highlighted the gap between teachers and students. Had the university authority been more careful in the beginning, it could have been avoided, it mentioned.
At the same time it appealed the University to replace the ladies hostel No.1 warden and caret-taker for their conduct which included imposing of unnecessary fine to hosteller (students were imposed a fine Rs.50 for leaving a morsel of food on the plates, expelling student sfrom the hostel on flimsy grounds, arbitrarily handling the rules and regulations to the extent of expelling students without the knowledge of University Authority.
Besides that it demanded immediate revoking of expulsion meted out to four hostellers of ladies hostel No.1.
The students also maintained that emotional harassment was a daily routine for the hostellers to hear sarcastic and foul works inside the hostel from their own wardens, there is a big communication and cultural gap between the hostellers and the warden and creating division among the hostellers by driving a wedge among them etc. Taking into account the facts they demanded that the warden and care-taker should not be allowed to continue their responsibilites.
In their other grievances the student stated that the hostel timing issued on November 3 setting a deadline to return to hostel by 5pm mentioned is not specified whether it is for Men’s or Ladies. Taking into account the case of research scholars and science students, it is critically observed that the notification will not be workable.
The load shedding has become a routine at mid night. With the exam approaching, it is the wish of the student community in the hostel to have electricity all through-out the night.
Manipur University, being the highest institution in the state, deserves well-trained, discipline and skilled guards. For the teaching faculty in particular and student community in general, it has become and ordeal dealing with the home-gurads. Home gurads should be kept separately from the hostellers. Separate lodging should be arragned for Men’s hostel 2, 3 and ladies hostel should have separate lady security guards, it said.
Further the memorandum stated that checking of lady students by male security at the main gate and A-block is an offence to the society and the student’s community. Alternative arrangement should be made by the Univeristy Authority most urgently, it demanded.
Besides this the memorandum demanded library timing should be extended till 9pm to create a reading atmosphere and providing the hostellers more facility, taking into account the 24X7 security provided at the main gate, the very term ‘care-taker’ should be changed.
It also said alternative title should be substituted as it is not suitable for the post graduate students community, hostel collapsible doors are kept locked at night.
With the precaution given by the disaster management and Manipur being among the earth quake-prone states, it is advisable to keep the gates open at night as the main gate the university is under 24×7 surveillance, mentioned the memorandum.
