Cabinet approves DAA extension by another year

IMPHAL, Nov 19: A state cabinet meeting held this evening under the chair of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has approved the extension of Disturbed Area Act, DAA, in the state for another one year with effect from December 1 excluding the seven assembly segment under Imphal Municipal Council.

The DAA, enables the promulgation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, AFSPA, so in effect, the cabinet decision today amounts to extending the promulgation of the AFSPA for another year in the state.

Speaking to the media after the cabinet meeting, the spokesperson of SPF government, IFCD minister N. Biren stated that the cabinet further recommended holding the Winter Session of the 9th Manipur State Legislative Assembly on December 22 and 23.

The cabinet also approved to increase the present power tariff in the state by 31 percent. The previous cost of electric power per unit was Rs 2.60 and after increment it will be about Rs 3.25 per unit.

The compensation for the destruction and other losses incurred by the candidates during violence at the time of ADC election was also approved by the state cabinet today.

Further the cabinet approved the appointment of 13 drivers of General Administrative Department (GAD).
