The University Grants Commission (UGC) seems to be playing games with north-east. Through the National Eligibility Test (NET), it picks up the allotted SC, ST and OBC candidates to appease the Quota criteria already prescribed. The Assamese tribals benefit by quota policy. The rest of the posts meant for the general category is filled up by some Tiwari, Tripathi, Pandey, Bannerji or Chatterji from other parts of India . So the space meant for Assamese general category are deprived by such cunning schemes of the UGC. As such, we no longer have illustrious professors like Banikanta Kakoti, Krishnakanta Handique, Birinchi Barua, etc anymore to guide the students of the region.
