Manipur still unable to control gender violence says MLA Dr. Ng. Bijoy

IMPHAL, Nov 25: As a part of the worldwide observation of International Fortnight Protesting Violence Against Women, Girl and Children, the fortnight observation was also launched in Manipur today under the banner International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at MDU Hall, Imphal, organized by the women committee of united NGO’s Mission Manipur (UNMM).

The theme of the observation is “Structure of Violence: defining the intersection of Militarism and Violence Against Women”.

The inaugural function was graced by Dr. Ngairangbam Bijoy MLA Khurai A/C as the chief guest, Dr. L. Ibetombi, chairman Manipur state commission for women as the functional president while RK Nayansana chairperson Manipur state Social Welfare Board, Rose Mangsi Haokip as president Kuki Women Union attended as the guest of honours.

Dr. Ng Bijoy, while speaking at the function, noted that failure to maintain gender management in a family is the main cause of violence against women besides that lack of knowledge, education and understanding are some other factors.

Dr. Ng. Bijoy further maintained that despite the increasing pace of development in the state, Manipur society is unable to contain gender violence. The rate of domestic violence has sharply fallen however social violence has increased in an alarming rate, Dr. Ng. Bijoy said.

He also appealed to people to change habitual attitude, maintain family understandings and also to retrospect the unique role and contribution of women in shaping up the cosmology of the Manipuri society. He also stress the need for the NGO working in the field, security forces and government to sincerely work together.

Dr. L Ibetombi, chairperson of MSCW, in her presidential speech also pointed out that poor economy, arm conflict situation and corruption has polluted the mind of the people making them restless and subsequently sparking violence in the society.

The primary need in tackling gender violence now and to avoid in the future is that every family has to play a vital role in tackling gender violence, he observed.

The programme was also attended by various communities, NGOs, community leaders, victim of domestic violence etc.
A short documentary titled “Chain” themed on violence against women was also released in the function. The documentary was directed by Borun Thokchom, correspondent of DY-365.

  1. dear ,sir as a strategic planer of defence let me sear my view. when i was posted in j&k all muslim women use to weared face & body cover. i asked to one of my freind why ? it isbeacuse it help them to protect from srtanger men. when i analyse it was somewhat true that 80% women crime in india is causes due to women negligence. if they are strick to their dress and behaviour it is not easy to attract the stranger person. it is also true that women has capacity to protect themselves. so i encourage my sisters be care about your dress cote & ready to fight the stranger. it depend on you.
