SPG team arrives in Imphal ahead of Sonia Gandhi’s visit

IMPHAL, Nov 9: Ahead of the visit of the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi who is likely touch down in Imphal on November 12, a team of the Special Protection Guard (SPG) led by DIG Pankaj Kumar arrived in Imphal this morning.

The SPG team comprising of 19 members upon their arrival in Imphal inspected various places where Sonia Gandhi is likely to pay visit during the tour.

The SPG team started their inspection this morning around 10:30 am.

The team visited three Ima Keithel of Khwairamband bazar, Sahid Minar, Polo ground and Kangla and also the airport including the high storage bulding in Imphal areas.

According to a source, the SPG team might visit and inspect the Khuga Dam in Churachandpur district tomorrow. Inauguration of Khuga Dam is first in the list of programmes for the UPA chairperson, the source added.

The source also said that the public meeting planned at Pologround might shift to Kangla due to security reason.

The UPA chairperson is to arrive by a special fight on Friday and she will visit Churachandpur to inaugurate the Khuga Dam which will be followed by the inauguration of the three reconstructed Ema Keithel at Khwairamband bazar. After that Sonia Gandhi will inaugurate the Congress Bhawan Annexe Building and the 80 bedded Muslim girls’ hostel at Hatta. Later she will also inaugurate the Tribal Market being constructed at New Checkon.

She will also lay foundation stone for the INA memorial complex mega project, tourist destination, Moirang and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Makhan, Senapati district.

In the meantime, ahead of Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Manipur, Manipur police has started taking stringent security measures. As a past of the security measure, police commandos led by Dy. SP S Ibomcha conducted a cordon search operation in Paona bazaar areas today.

All male were brought from different areas of Paona bazaar area and made them congregate at Polo ground Kangjeibung Maning where verification were conducted.

According to Dy. SP S Ibomcha today’s operation was taken up in the heart of Imphal city as a part of preventive measurement in connection with the visit of of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and also as a part to controlling law and situation.

He further said that about 37 persons were detained for further verification and all of them were released after a good verification, he added.
