ECI to hold foundation day

    IMPHAL, Dec 22: The Election Commission of India, New Delhi is going to celebrate National Voters’ Day every on January 25, its foundation Day starting from 2011.
    A press conference was held at the south block conference hall of secretariat during which PC Lawmkunga, Chief Electoral Officers (CEO) Manipur, brief the media persons in connection with the observation.
    The annual observation will be organized under the theme “Greater Participation for Stronger Democracy”.
    PC Lawmkunga, CEO Manipur said that the Commission’s objective is to increase enrolment of voters, by using this occasion so as to make universal adult franchise a reality and thereby enhance the quality of Indian democracy.
    The CEO further laid down elaborate activities to be observed during the celebration of the National Voters’ Day in State.
    The activities have different categories; in the state level categories the commission is going to organize events in the state capital in association with media, Civil Societies, opinion groups, States administration, State Election Commission and Distribution EPICs to new vote of the local polling area.
    For the district level the commission is going to organized appropriate events at the District Head Quarters in association with Panchayat organizations, academic institutions, civil society groups, media etc and also distribution EPICs to new vote of the local polling besides that organizing in the ERO/AERO level and polling station level.
    The CEO further asserted that apart from CEO’s office, functions have to be arranged at all the offices of 11 DHQs (including ADC, Jiribam and Kangpokpi), 13 EROs (minus 7 DCs who are EROs), 59 AEROs and 2195 polling stations. However, since the Commission has allowed combination of NVD function for all polling stations located in the same building/premises and also combination of functions of nearby polling station at the District, ERO and AERO levels, the number of venues of function will be reduced to some extent, adds the CEO.
    Another activity is the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Activities where in state level essay competition for the topic “topics of Universal Adult Franchise in Indian Democracy” will be held on January 9, 2011 for class XI to post graduate students with cash prize.
    District level quiz competition at all DHQS including Jiribam and Kangpokpi under the theme “Democracy & Elections in India with cash prize and state level quiz competition under the similar theme and also state level Multi Media campaigns on “Greater Participation for Stronger Democracy”.
    In the meantime, PC Lawmkunga CEO, informed that as per the direction of the election Commission of India, a special summary revision of Photo electoral rolls with effect from January 1, 2011 is in progress in Manipur and the final publication will be done on 5th January.
    Further the CEO revealed that the current number of electors in the state is 16,78,625 of which approximately 50,000 forms for inclusion and 7,000 forms for deletion have received by all electoral registration officers in the State adding he observed that there may be an increase of 35,000 to 40,000 electors.
    Photo Identity cards will be issued to all booth level officers of polling stations and name boards will be also be displayed at the respective residences of each booth level officers before January 25, 2011 and the preparation for the same is in progress said the CEO.
