NEC to fund Tongjei Maril development: Ranjit

IMPHAL, Dec 24: The North-Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned Rs 84 crores for the development of 185 kilometers long Old Cachar Road, popularly known as Tongjei Maril which has now been converted into NH-53 (A), stated works minister K. Ranjit today during the inauguration of Nongleiband Bridge over the Leimatak River under Nungba sub-division in Tamenglong district constructed by State Public Works Department at an estimated cost of Rs 249.38 lakhs under the special plan assistance (SPA).

The works minister further said that the state government has taken keen interests to develop the historical road of Tongjei Maril which had once served as the major lifeline of the state. The state government is constantly working out to bring equitable development in both hill and valley areas, Ranjit noted.

He stated that often there are hindrances while taking up any development work. The state government has managed to take up a large number of development works in the state against all odds.

Ranjit also asserted that the newly inaugurated bridge is a special Christmas gift to the villagers and they should welcome any development work rather than giving obstructions.

The works minister also called for unity amongst the people of the state and appealed to all to work for the future of a developed state.

Delivering the presidential address, MLA of Nungba A/C and President of MPCC, G. Gaikhangam stated that the hill-valley relationship will be strengthened furthermore with the development of the historical Tongjei Maril which once served as the only lifeline of the state.

He further maintained that development works should not be politicized and they should be taken up in the real interests of the people.

Gaikhangam enjoined that one should live for the motherland and die for the motherland. The people should have sense of responsibility to uplift their motherland.

He also appealed to the people of Tamenglong to make the district one of the most developed district in the state.

The works minister K. Ranjit and MLA Gaikhangam also made monetary and material donations to the villagers of Nungba for the happy occasion of Christmas.
