IMPHAL, Dec 21: The proscribed UNLF has clarified that Yumnam Panthung alias Romeo, son of Yaima, of Sugnu Wangma Napat who had surrendered to the Assam Rifles yesterday along with an M-16 rifle is a deserter who has been declared as offender since October 2, 2003.
A statement of UNLF said that Panthung has violated the code of conduct of the revolutionary party and he had deserted from the WTF Task Force of MPA. The M-16 rifle he had surrendered to the Assam Rifles does not belong to the UNLF. It was rather a fake surrender ceremony staged by the Assam Rifles along with Manipur Police like the previous ceremonies.
It further stated that the UNLF will give severe penalty to Yumnam Panthung for joining hands with the security force at the surrender ceremony.
