From Our Correspondent

LAMKA, December 19: Police on Sunday managed to make some headway in the case of the rape and murder of a woman in Churachandpur district, with the establishment of the identity of the victim.

The victim is identified to be one Hatkholhing, 55, w/o Songzamang of Pakvom Village, about 30 km from Churachandpur district head quarter.

The victim is survived by four children and a husband.

Reports said late Hatkholhing left home on December 11 carrying yam, Chilli (Umorok) and dry meat of boar for selling it in the local markets and at the same time deliver some to her maternal home at Misaolhavom Village.

After starting from home on foot she reached Churachandpur district headquarter around 5 pm in the evening and rested at Gangpimual at a relative’s place. From there she headed for her maternal home at Misaolhavom. it has been speculated that she might have been abducted from there by miscreats from near a culvert which is just about a stone throw from her parental house.

Police suspected involvement of some of the villagers as the basket which the victim was carrying at the time of her abduction, her undergarments and other clothing were recovered under the culvert from where she is beleived to be abducted.

This could be termed the second such incident happening around the area in recent times as a similar incident of rape and murder had occured in 2008.

Sources from the family disclosed that the victim went to her maternal home to deliver the boar meat that was hunted by the victim’s husband. As a part of their tradition it is a must that the neck of any hunted animals is offered to the maternal family of a married woman.

It may be recalled that the lifeless body of Hatkholhing was found covered by straws without any clothes on December 13, morning at a paddy field between Phaikot and Ngurte village falling under Churachandpur Police station.
