IMPHAL, Dec 4: The state IFCD and YAS minster, N Biren has said government is committed to complete the Thoubal Multipurpose Project by December 2011.

The project is designed to give 7.5 MW of power and 10 millions of potable and irrigation water, Biren said.

The minister disclosed this while briefing media persons during an inspection tour of the ongoing project today.

In order to expedite the work progress, a double shifts work, i.e Day and Night shifts, will be maintained very shortly.

However the minister asserted that it will be a tough challenge for the government as is to give full proof security for the workers and adequate supply of fuel for the machineries.

After completion of the Khuga Dam, which lasted more than 28 years, the government has shifted all their focus to the Thoubal multipurpose project and Dolaithabi project, said the minister.

The estimate cost of the pipeline, which is expected to supply 10 million gallons of water to the urban area, to be laid from Thoubal Multipurpose Project to Irilbung is expected to be about 600 to 700 crores of rupees. Formal talk for sanctioning the amount was done by the Chief Minister with the Central Ministry, Biren said.

Construction of Thoubal Multi purpose Project began in 1980 however few years later the project was stopped for few years said the minister. The work resumed again from 2005-06 and until 2007 July 2 the total work progress was recorded to be only 15 percent.

But now 70 percent of the work at the spillway is completed while about 75 percent of has been completed at the Main Dam, Biren said and asserted that the state government is committed to complete the project by December 2011 before the upcoming general election.

Apart from the minister, inspection team also include additional chief engineer-II, Kh Asokumar Singh, SE Thoubal S Surjakumar and engineer and officials of the concerned Department.
