State scribes’ hardships placed before South Asian media panel

NEW Delhi, Dec 28: Editor local Daily “Ireibak” Irengabam Arun who is also a member of the South Asia Media Commission submitted a report on hurdles and problems faced by the working journalist of the state before the sitting of the commission at the India International Centre Annexe, New Delhi today.
The sitting of the South Asia Media Commission which was convened under the chairmanship of the commission president KK Katyal a renown journalist, initially discussed the serious impact given to the ethics and practise of the profession of journalism by the recent Radia Tape scandal and was followed by the discussion on the problems faced by the journalists community of the North Eastern states and Jammu Kashmir where the conflict situations have seriously given an impact to every spheres of life.
The editor, “Irieibak” placed his observations on the problems and pressures that the journalists of the state have been facing while trying to maintain neutrality between the state and non-state actors.
Further Teresa Rehman who formerly worked for Tehelka Magazine also placed the reports on  the threats she had faced while publishing the reports in connection with the July 23, 2009 Khwairamband firing incident where a pregnant woman along with a former UG were killed and several others injured in and alleged firing of the state police commandos.
The condition of journalists in Jammu Kashmir was placed before the commission sitting today by the bureau chief of the Hindu paper Shujat Bhukari.
The sitting of South Asia Media Commission today was jointly attended by the renown journalists of the country like, S Nihal Singh former editor ‘Statesman’, Om Thanvi, editor ‘Jansatta’, Satish Jacob former bureau chief BBC, Vinod Sharma president South Asian Free Media Association, and the sitting finally resolved to take steps for the strengthening of the commission and sending of the commission’s team to the conflict hit states like Manipur and Jammu & Kashmir to overview the conditions of journalists in these region.
On the other hand 10th anniversay of the South Asian Free Media Association will be observed tomorrow at Rafi Marg New Delhi along with a seminar the report added.
