IMPHAL, Dec 12: The 4th Foundation Day of the Manipur State Commission for Women was held today at the meeting hall of the DC, Imphal West located at Lamphelpat.
Ex-chief minister of Manipur W Nipamacha Singh attended the function as chief guest and Dr L Ibetombi Devi chairperson MSCW presided over the function.
Ak Meerabai, chairperson Manipur Women Development Corporation, Rk Noyonsana Devi chairperson Manipur State Social Welfare Board, G Satyabati Devi director Social Welfare department, Government of Manipur and K Sobita Devi director Arts and culture, GOM attended the function as guest of honour.
Giving the keynote address S Meghachandra Sharma member secretary MSCW stated that the main objective of setting up the Manipur State Commission for Women was to conciliate and bring an amicable remedy of violence against women. The commission has so far received 28 cases relating to violence against women till date, out of which six cases had already been closed.
He further added that the commission has been undergoing awareness campaign with the theme ‘Awake Women’ and ‘Khungung maikei panglashi’ which has been completed in eight of the nine districts in the state and further added that the awareness campaign in the remaining district namely Tamenglong will soon be taken up.
The commission is also planning for publication of a bi lingual half yearly journal in the state soon, he added.
Ak Meerabai in her speech at the function apprized about the role to be played by women in maintaining peace and harmony in the state.
Stating that time has come for the women to stop depending on others, Mirabai express regret that lack of education has handicapped women from entering in politics despite of the 33 percent reservation made for them.
She also put forth that women should start to take part in the day to day decision making and administration. She further declared that Manipur is now passing through a very sensitive and difficult situation because of the numerous factors like drug menace, arm conflict, HIV/AIDS, etc. She further maintained that women has a big role to play in bringing a positive step towards fighting these issues. She also elaborated on the need of spreading awareness among women on the issues of health and education.
G Satyabati Devi, in her speech stated that the state already has four offices where anyone can report on any issues relating to violence against women.
Elaborating that violence against women still exist in Manipur even though government put many bills and acts into practice to stop violence against women.
As a part of the function a souvenir ‘MSCW at a glance’ was also released.
