UNLF chairman remanded to judicial custody for 14 more days

IMPHAL Dec 30: UNLF Chairman Rk Sanayaima has been further remanded to judicial custody for another 14 days after appearing at the NIA special court at Guwahati at around 1 pm today. He will again be produced in the court of judge AK Das on January 11.
The UNLF leader was produced before the court uncuffed today following a directive of the same court, Judge AK Das in a previous order had found no concrete evidence that the UNLF leader could be involved in dangerous and desperate activity and had ordered that Rk Meghen should be uncuffed on the way to court and while being escorted back to judicial custody.
â€œIt appears that the said report does not disclose any concrete proof regarding the proneness of the said UTP to violence, his tendency to escape and any proof of his involving in dangerous and desperate activities and the said report has also failed to disclose any data base information including reasonable expectation of exposing any violence with tendency to escape”, the judge had stated.
Taking the opinion of the Guwahati police regarding the directive of the court , the policemen commented on having intelligence reports that some UNLF cadres based at Guwahati are trying to rescue their chairman , and the handcuffs was a precautionary security measure and it was best to do so in case of any eventualities.
It may be mentioned that Sanayaima’s lawyer M Gunadhor had earlier approached the NIA court that his client is not a petty criminal nor was he involved in any crime, but his client was only asserting the right to self determination and putting Sanayaima in handcuffs is a direct violation of his fundamental rights. Gunadhor had quoted similar cases with reference to Supreme Court proceedings.
Following the petition of Sanayaima’s lawyer, the court had issued the directive to the jail authorities and Guwahati police to produce the accused uncuffed.
