Woman visitor thrashed by secretariat security

IMPHAL, Dec 21: Amidst hues and cries from various sections of the society regarding the acts of crime and violence against women, a policeman manhandled a lady in front of other people yesterday at the New Secretariat (Ministerial Block).
Speaking to mediapersons today at the office of All Manipur Student Guardians’ Organization, the victim Konthoujam Geeta, 37, daughter of Udoi, of Konthoujam Maning Leikai stated that the incident happened yesterday when she went to the New Secretariat to meet an official at MOBC minister’s office to enquire about a scheme along with a DO letter issued by MP Dr. T. Meinya.
She asked for entry permission at the security officer at the gate, however the security officer identified as one S. Samananda (Shamo) did not consider her permission even if it was visitors’ day and made her stand at the gate for more than 20 minutes.
When she again enquired the officer whether she would be allowed to meet the official or not, the officer slammed her saying “my granddaughter is much worthier than you” without having any relation to the context.
She then asked the officer as to why he had brought family matters in the context of granting permission. The officer suddenly dragged her inside the campus and punched on her face very hardly. She lost her senses for quite sometime while other personnel including women security guards tried to stop the officer but he went on taunting her using abusive words. The security officer Shamo even threatened her that he could easily kill a lady like her and later give out some money as compensation.
Geeta further said that she sobbed heavily in front of other people unable to bear the pain as well as the pangs of his abusive words, and she returned home dejected. In the evening she began to feel uneasy and she was taken to JN Hospital for undergoing CT scan and other diagnosis.
She cried out that the act of manhandling her by a security officer is a clear sign of violence against women and so the concerned authority should take strict action against the police officer.
The working president of All Manipur Student Guardians’ Organization, Chaoba stated that the law enforcing agencies of the state should upkeep the dignity of women. The unfortunate incident of manhandling a lady by a police officer is not a rare case in the state but the concerned authority should prevent such ugly incident in the future.
