IMPHAL, Jan 16: There can be peace in the state only when there is proper utilization of funds for development, stated senior opposition leader O. Joy today during a one-day political conference on the topic “Economy, Development and Peace in Manipur” organized by Manipur People’s Party (MPP), Singjamei A/C at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai.
O. Joy further said that there is huge disparity in the socio-economic conditions of the present Manipuri society. The chasm between the rich and poor people has often been a factor for social clashes and the differences can be narrowed down only if the development works and schemes are implemented to the fullest, he noted.
The socio-political economy of the people can be raised only if the state machineries function well. The law enforcers of the state should not go beyond the boundaries of the law and they should not do anything that will mar peace and tranquility of the state, the opposition leader asserted.
The vice-president of MPP, Y. Khemchand stated that the economic condition of every household of the state has been affected by the problems of unemployment and insurgency. The people should take up steps for self-employment by establishing more of self-help groups under the financial assistance of various nationalized banks.
He further maintained that the whole drama in RK Meghen’s arrest by NIA has created apprehension amongst the people despite of the Central government’s offer to the insurgent groups of the state to have peace parleys.
The meeting was also attended by other leaders of MPP including MLA RK Anand, S. Umananda, W. Leishang, S. Biramani, RK Sanajaoba, Ch. Ibotombi, H. Jayanta and M. Chinglen.
