Two cops suspended in killing case

IMPHAL, Jan 5: A sub-inspector and two constable of the Manipur Police have been suspended in connection with the killing of a member of the gram panchayat of Khangabok, Thoubal district.
The deceased member of the Gram Panchayat has been identified to be one Ningthoukhongjam Inao, 45 of Khangabok Part-I. He was killed in the evening of December 31 by a team of Imphal West Commandos in a reported encounter.
According to sources the victim was killed in an encounter by the police commandos in an encounter after the commando team reportedly received specific information about movement of militants. The sources said that the victim was killed on retaliation firing from the side of the police commandos and two suspected militants escaped from the scene.
In the meantime another commando personnel identified to be one A. Sadananda was also reportedly injured in the encounter.
Contradicting the claim of the Police local sources said that the victim was picked from his residence and later was gunned down at Hayen Labuk in a fake encounter.
A Joint Action Committee was formed in connection with the killing and a bandh was called along the NH-39 at Khangabok stretch, Thoubal district, on January 1 and 2 disrupting normal life at the area.
However normal life resumed at the area after the local MLA, O. Landhoni, assured the agitating JAC and public with magisterial enquiry followed by appropriate action if the commando personnel were found guilty.
The suspended commando personnel were identified as one Sub-Inspector Premjit and Constables Tarun Kumar and Milan.
