Two women rescued, Nine UG cadres arrested

IMPHAL, Jan 29: Security forces claimed to have arrested nine militant cadres and rescued two women from the clutches of two their abductor in a successful counter insurgency operation launched in different part of the State.
In the first incident troops of 33 Assam Rifles rescued two women who were kidnapped by KCP (MC).
A statement issued by the PIB Defense Wing stated that acting on information regarding extortion money being paid by some women, troops of 33 Assam Rifles commenced search of the general area Keibul – Ithing of Bishnupur District at around 10:30 am yesterday.
During the course of operation an individual moving suspiciously, on being challenged to identify himself, fired at the column and fled amidst the thick grass and phumdis. On being chased by the troops, the individual managed to escape using the dense phumdis and grass as cover, it said.
It further asserted that the search of the nearby huts among the phum led to the release of the two kidnapped women identified as Thangjam Ongbi Subarani alias Ichan, 42, w/o Thangjam Ajit, resident of Sagomal Thingom Lekai, Imphal West and Oinam Ongbi Chanam alias Dilabi, 47, w/o Oinam Bijendro, resident of Hairongoi Thongmaibam Lekai, Singjamei, Imphal West. The women are sisters of Ajit working as Under Secretary in the Finance Department of Manipur Government.
The women had been summoned to Moirang Bazar to pay extortion money against a demand of Rs 10 lakh served on them by cadres of KCP (MC) on January 24. No one was however present at the designated site to collect the money. They were then contacted on mobile phone and asked to proceed near village Keibul.
The money was delivered by them at 4:30 pm on January 28 to one unidentified man accompanied by one woman who then kidnapped them at gun point. After being blindfolded, they were taken in an autorickshaw and made to walk towards a fishing hut located within the phumdis and kept captive there.
Subsequently, additional money was demanded by the cadres with a stipulation that the same be paid by 1pm on January 29 failing which the ladies were to be killed. Timely and swift action by 33 Assam Rifles foiled their plans and the ladies were rescued, said the release.
It said that the ladies were handed over to their family members. The unidentified women involved in the kidnapping is suspected to be Chouba alias Devla wife of Sham Kanbai, 25, Keibul Lamjao Mayai Lekai who was earlier arrested by 33 Assam Rifles on April 29, 2010 for involvement in extortion activities.
On the other hand in separate counter insurgency operations various troops under the HQ IGAR(S) apprehended at least nine cadres of militant belonging to different groups operating in the state.
A statement issued by the PROG IGAR (S), said that discovering the presence of UG’s cadres in general area Nambashi Khn, troops of 12 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) launched operation in the area and apprehended three KYKL militants on January 28. The individual were identified as No. 402 ss cpl K S Romajit Singh, s/o Rajan Singh, r/o Langol, Lamphel, Imphal West, No. 747 ss pvt Takhel Lambam Rabi Singh, s/o Takhel Lambam Ibomcha Singh, r/o Thangmeiband Khundram Selugba Leikai, Lamphel, Imphal West and No. 770 ss pvt N Telheiba Meitei, s/o Hemanta Meieti, r/o Chingarel, Porompat, Imphal East. The apprehendees were later handed over to Lamlai Police station.
In another incident, troops of 42 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IGAR(South) launched operation in the general areas of Bijoypur and Kakching Lamkhai  and apprehended two PREPAK and three KCP militant from the areas on January 28. The individuals were identified as Thangjam Joshikanta Singh, 31, r/o Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi Imphal (PREPAK), Khumbanmayum Basanta Singh, 40, r/o Nongdawang Leikai, Imphal East (PREPAK), Moirangthem Angoton alias Tomba Singh, 23, r/o Yairipok Top, Thoubal (KCP), Yumnam Ngamba Meitei alias Septi, 21, r/o Yairipok Top, Thoubal (KCP) and Yumnam Arun Kumar alias Naobi, 21, Yairiop Top, Thoubal (KCP). One .32 mm Pistol along with two live rounds were recovered from the apprehendees, it said.
Similarly, troops of 23 Assam Rifles and 12 MARATHA LI under HQ IGAR(South) launched joint operation in general area of Mayang Imphal and apprehended one UNLF  cadre at around 1 am on January, 29, 2011. The individual is identified as Postshangbam Netaji, 21, s/o Ibohal of Wangoi and was handed over to Mayang Police station.
