AMHDTA declares support for COTA demands

IMPHAL, Feb 11: The All Manipur Hill Districts Teachers’ Association has today maintained that the association in collaboration with the Council of Teachers Association has decided the withdrawal of teachers from being enumerators in the ongoing Census 2011.
The two associations have appealed to all teachers who are already engaged with the government for census duty to withdraw and the teachers who will be called for Census duty by the government not to accept the government calls.
The All Manipur Hill Districts Teachers’ Association in support of the fast unto death agitation of COTA today convened a press conference at the Johnstone Higher Secondary School this evening. Speaking at the conference, James Poingamlung, spokesperson of the association stated that the government has been using the teacher community as enumerators of the census duty since 1951. He further stated that even though the teaching occupation is regarded highly by people at other parts of the country, the state government has totally failed to respect and fulfill the just demands of the teachers in the state.
The spokesperson further declared that the teachers will be continuing with their various forms of agitation until the government fulfills their demands of implementation of the 6th pay commission in toto and unconditional release of the arrested teachers.
He also maintained that if the government meet their demands without further delay, the teachers will hold extra classes for the students to pick up for the lost time.
The spokesperson on asked if the students undergoing sit in protest at the CC higher secondary school organized by a joint students’ union were instigated by the teachers, replied that the students were only demanding their right to education and no teacher in any capacity is associated or related to the protest.
