Journalists wear black badge to protest attempted abduction of colleague

Imphal, Feb 10: Journalist fraternity of Manipur has today worn black badge in protest against the recent abduction attempt on K Manikanta, a sub-editor of local English daily Hueiyen Lanpao.
On the intervening night of February 7 and 8 last, three unknown armed persons attempted to abduct Manikanta near his residence in Maibam Meishnam Leikai even as he was returning from his office. Fortunately for him, his family members intervened upon hearing the hue and cry outside.
The wearing of black badge in protest against the invasion of free press in the State will continue till tomorrow which is when All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) will submit a memorandum to the Governor. The decision to of wear black badge was endorsed by an emergency meeting of AMWJU yesterday. 
The recent incident of threatening the media person is the latest amongst many such threats and intimidations directed against the media by various sections of the society including State agencies in Manipur, said Khelen Thokchom, convenor of AMWJU and a special correspondent of The Telegraph.
