Manipur finishes second with 48 golds in natl games, 2011

IMPHAL, Feb 25: Manipur has secured the overall second position at the 34th National Games held at Jharkhand by bagging 48 gold medals coming after the Services which could secure more than 60 gold medals. The state came down by three gold medals from the 51 gold medals it secured in the last national games held at Assam.
The state canoeing and kayaking team increased the state gold medals tally by winning another two today and helped the state finished in the second position six golds ahead of Harayana, who are in the third position at the end of the 34th National games.
Sushila increased the state gold tally by winning gold in K-1 event while Ching Ching got her third gold medal in K-1 event.
On the other hand, Jonin secured a silver medal in C-1 today. Bonny and Nanao also bagged a silver medal in women`™s K-2 event.
Rahul, Suresh, Nanao and Nilkanta also secured a bronze medal in men`™s C-4 event.
The state team loss in the final round of canoeing polo to Madhya Pradesh by a 2-1 scoreline.
Speaking to IFP, the MOA secretary Manglem stated that Manipur has stood second in the medal tally of the 34th National Games by securing a total of 48 gold medals. The state canoeing and kayaking team have made the state proud by bagging four gold medals, eight silver medals and six bronze medals on the last day of the Games.
However, the state could not reach the target of securing more than 90 gold medals mainly due to bad performance of women`™s football team, taekwondo, karate-do, weight-lifting and boxing teams, he said.
Manglem also stated that many players from the state have represented other states and have bagged several medals following lucrative offers made to them.

  1. Manipur have done it once again reaffirming it as no.1 sports state of India by securing 2nd position overall behind Services.It could have been overall winner by huge margin if top players have represented the state.
