IMPHAL Feb 6: Independent candidate for the ensuing Konthoujam bye election, Khangembam Ranjit held the ceremonial flag hoisting ceremony today at Konthoujam Mayai Leikai public ground today.
Supporters of the candidate from various wards of the constituency thronged the ground and brought ‘athenpot’ consisting of rice and other vegetables, a meeting was held afterwards at the venue.
President of Janata Dal (United) M Tombi and CPI (M) president Sarat Salam spoke of their support for the candidate at the gathering.
Talking at the sidelines of the meeting, a confident Kh Ranjit told media persons that he contested in the election following pressure from the public and is confident of getting support from his home polling namely Khumbong, Ngairangbam, Khabam and Moidangpok.
Inquiring on his motive towards contesting the election, he stated that developmental works are lacking in the constituency and his aim is for overall development including social upliftment of the underprivileged.
“We need to make some effective changes in the society, the changes have to be tackled from the grassroots level and I want to be a catalyst in bringing about the change”,Ranjit said.
Reacting to his competition, Ranjit stated that the Congress candidate is out of touch with the Konthoujam public and wouldn’t know better from worse. The Trinamool candidate, according to Ranjit is a power monger and has many weak points. “He has never worked at the grassroots level and is simply trying to buy votes with currency notes. In case they win the election by buying voters, the future of the Konthoujam constituency is bleak, but I know the public is with me this time”,he said.
