Action taken against three cops involve in custodial torture

IMPHAL, March 2: Taking swift action against the erring police commandos, three police commandos currently posted in Thoubal district have been suspended from their jobs by the concerned authorities.
According to a source, the three police commando personnel identified as head constable Shakthi, constable Baikim and Ng Arunkumar have been suspended following their involvement in the custodial torture of an alleged gun trafficker who succumbed to his injuries the next day after he was handed over to his family members by the police.
It is further reported that of the three Ng Arunkumar is currently attached with the Thoubal Police commandos unit even though he is a personnel of the 5th IRB.
Meanwhile it may be mentioned that the 52 year old man identified as one one Athokpam Angousana, 52, s/o (L) Yaima of Kumbi Napat Mayai Lekai was reportedly picked up by a team of Manipur police commandos from his home on the evening of February 27 at around 5 pm. Even though the team had alleged hi to be a gun trafficker, they failed to produce any arrest memo at the time of the arrest.
The man was handed over to his family members the next day however due to his condition after his release he was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
It may also be mentioned that the MLA of the area N Mangi had made a hue and cry about the death terming it as custodial death and had even declared of taking the issue to the floor of the state assembly during the upcoming budget session which is to start from March 8.
The MLA while condemning the act of the police had even termed the state police commandos as anti social minded who have tarnished the image of the men in uniform.
