Five day Yaoshang holiday claims eleven lives

IMPHAL, Mar 24: Eleven persons have been killed while ten were injured in separate mishaps occurring during the five days Yaoshang holiday in the state starting March 19 to 24.

In the first incident which occurred on March 20, a person identified as Nongmaithem Shyam 32 s/o N Achou of Kwakeithel kongjeng Leikai was killed by an unknown person in front of his wife in broad daylight. The incident occurred while the victim was standing with his wife on the threshold of a restaurant located at Changangei Ucheckon, under the police jurisdiction of Irilbung police station, when an unidentified person attacked the person with an iron rod and after severely injuring the person, the unknown attacker fled from the scene.

According to police sources the victim was immediately taken to emergency ward of RIMS however the doctors declared him as brought dead.

In the second incident, on March 21 a road accident claimed the life of a youth identified as Moirangthem Dhanajit Singh 30 s/o late Tombi of Ningthoukhong bazaar. The incident happened on March 21 at around 11 pm at Ningthoukhong bazzar when the deceased along with a friend identified as A. Milamani s/o Shyamkeshore of the same locality were traveling on a two wheeler. Sources has maintained that while Dhanajit was killed in the road mishap, his friend who was pillion riding behind him survive and is currently undergoing treatment.

In yet another road mishap occurring on the same day, a person identified as Tokpam Raju 27 s/o T Manibabu died when a four wheeler hit his two-wheeler from behind at the Sangaipurou area while he was on his way towards RIMS. The four-wheeler managed to escape from the scene.

Another road mishap claimed the life of a non local on the same day. The person identified as Gonman Singh 50 s/o late Sher Singh of Rajasthan currently working as a driver of the North East Frontier Railway grade IV employee died in a road accident at Noney under Nungba PS.

On the same day another youth identified as Mutum Premkumar alias Puspo, 28, s/o M Manimohan Singh of Thoubal Kyam Shiphai babu bazaar was found dead under suspicious condition at around 8 pm in his own resident under Thoubal police station. He was found hanging from the roof of his own room, however the reason behind his death is yet to be ascertained.

On March 23, one Kharibam Bijen, 37, s/o late Kh Muhindro of Uripok Kheisam was chop to dead allegedly by a person suspected to be one Laishram Shantikumar 58 yrs of Nepra menjor mayai leikai Uripok using a sharp object.

According to sources the incident occurred at around 7:30 pm at Nepra Manjor mayai leikai, however the reason behind the gruesome killing is yet to be ascertained. In the meantime the concerned police have picked up the suspect for further identification and verification.

Further on the same day at around 10:30 pm a road mishap claimed the life of three youths at heiyalaobi public ground in between Phubala and Thinungei.

The incident happened the three youths along with their other friends were traveling on a DI truck and going towards a thabal chongba at the area.

According to the driver of the ill-fated DI truck, he lost control of the truck while trying not to hit some girls trying to cross the road.

The accident left three dead and eight others injured.

The dead has been identified as Laishram Gataraj, 18, s/o Jateshore, Chanambam Tomba alias Ranbir, 29, s/o Ibohal and Irom Suraj alias Thainao, 18, s/o Shova of Thinungei Mayai Leikai and the eight injured youths have been reported to be hospitalized at a hospital.

In yet another incident, one Assam Rifle personnel posted at Tripura was killed in a road accident today. The AR jawan identified as Oinam Govend 28 yrs s/o W. Ibotomba of Langmeidong Laimanai was hit by a canter 709 at Lamjao under Waikhom PS.
A married women also succumbed today at the RIMS during treatment for poisoning. The woman has been identified as Athokpam Nanao Devi 22 w/o A Milan of Naorem leikai pechu lampak. However the main cause of the incident cannot be ascertained till the filling of this report.
