IMPHAL, March 31: Decrying the state government for overlooking the threat on the life of Manipur Peoples’ Party president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and yesterday’s attack at his residence by armed miscreants, the party president today held a press conference at the MPP office.
The Yairipok Bishnunaha residence of Dr Nimaichand Luwang was attacked by armed miscreants suspected to be underground cadres yesterday evening at around 7:30 pm. The police reported bullet marks on the main gate and recovered three empty cases of AK munitions from the spot however no casualty was reported.
Talking to media persons during the conference, Dr. Nimaichand Luwang, disclosed that the he has been under threat from a militant organization since October 2009. And in connection with this he had apprise the government and requested to provide security, however the request was decline on the grounds of shortage of man power in the state home department.
The MPP president further revealed that he had no idea who was responsible for the attack but recalled that on January first week 2011, a news report on the statement of the KCP MTF (Sunil Meitei) militant was published by some of the local dailies urging the MPP president to remove former union minister and a member of the party Th. Chaoba and the general secretary Ibomcha from the party. The demand was however turned down with non removal of the party members.
However, owing to the inaction of the party to the threat for the removal of the party members, the threat grew stronger to the extent that the group warned of discarding the whole Manipur Peoples’ Party from the state.
While terming the state government’s failure to provide security measures as a threat to the very existence of democracy, he has also expressed his discontentment over the failure of the government.
He further decried the biasness attitude of the government for providing security only in favoritism and nepotism. The MPP president informed that it will apprise the Governor of the state and central ministry against the attitude shown towards the president of the main opposition party in the state by the state government.
Speaking during the conference, senior opposition MLA, O. Joy Singh, termed the threat as not only to MPP but a threat to the Indian parliamentary system of democracy. He further maintained that the concerned home department and the concerned authority must take full responsibility.
Before condemning the act of the government he has further drawn the attention of the central government to intervene.
