Agri fair will improve the quality of life of the farmers: Governor

IMPHAL, April 18: Governor of Manipur Gurbachand Jagat today during the inauguration of the  Central Agriculture University Fair, 2011 said that the Fair, “Agricultural Technologies and Farm Innovations for Prosperity of the NE Region” will improve the qualit of life of the farmers.
The fair is timely and appropriate in the quest of enhanced growth in the hill region not only for enhanced productivity, but also for improvement in sustainability, stability, equity, that will elevate the quality and value addition for making agriculture more remunerative.
Wife of the Governor, Kiran Jagat, MP Lok Sabha, Dr. Thokchom Meinya, MP Rajya Sabha, Rishang Keishing, Minister Agriculture Ph. Parijat, Director, ICAR, RC for NEH Region, Barapani and CAU v/c Dr. SN Puri attended today’s function.
The Governor in his speech stated that it is an important occasion for the Central Agricultural University, ICAR Institutes, concerned Departments under the Government of Manipur and other agriculture related organizations to showcase their achievements and provided an important opportunity to the scientists to share their experiences among themselves and get scientific inputs to develop and improve agricultural technologies and also to get the feedback from farmers and address their problems.
It is also an unique platform for the farmers of the region to discuss their problems with experts in different areas of agriculture and allied sciences and expressed that the Agri Fair will prove a potential forum for public-private participation and will address the problems of the farmers.
He further said that Central Agricultural University plays a great role in the fields of crop improvement, crop production, natural resource management, crop protection, livestock and fish husbandry, post harvest technology and extension education. The role of extension services, especially in technology is most crucial for the farmers to realize the gains from technological involvements. From the scientists’ point of view, it is important to see the technology reaches the end users in the right manner. Further, the extension mechanism provides an opportunity for the researchers to access and refine the technologies. Extension has been put to serve production oriented program, area development initiatives, target based service schemes and, largely, as a technology delivery mechanism. In a nutshell, the simple purpose of extension is “helping people to help themselves” and this can be achieved by understanding the needs and opportunities of the farmers have to be emphasized.
Further stating that the Animal husbandry dept and Fisheries are other sectors providing important parts of human diet of this region. The University is also providing technical back-up and training support to strengthen these sectors. And hope that the enhancement of these sectors will provide additional income and employment opportunities to the farmer community of this region. Today the farmers are needed to connect with agri-business production systems research institutions and public administration at both domestic and global market levels and other numerous partners he added.
The conventional mode of transfer of technology through personal contact by extension agencies is no longer the predominant mode of extension. There is more diverse need of information not only for production procedures, but also for quality certification and reporting, grading, packaging, storage, transportation and other requirements for both domestic and export market. To achieve the purpose, the Central Government has started cyber extension, i.e., Kissan Call Centre, Community Radio Station and E-learning to get the benefit of such efforts of Government policies and latest agricultural technologies added.
At last he mentioned that the CAU Agri Fair will attract many farmers of the region, particularly of Manipur for getting acquainted with the latest agricultural technologies and address their problems.
In the meantime minister of Agriculture Ph. Parijat who is attend as guest of honour said that such occasion is important for Central Agricultural University, ICAR institutes, dept of Government of Manipur and other agriculture and allied organizations to showcase their achievements. Through this Fair, experience sharing between farmers & scientists will take place. The CAU is a multi-campus University having its colleges in six different states of the NE region except Nagaland and Assam. All its colleges impart education, training & extension activities in different branches of Agriculture. Besides, research is also carried out on important issues in these branches.
He further said that the Jhum cultivation, improper water management, mono-cropping, soil acidity etc. are major problems, which should be given due attention. In the same way, being a majority of the population non-vegetarian, pig farming, fish farming and poultry farming are other areas where a lot of works have to be done. I would like to exhort the scientists of this University to evaluate the situation and suggest appropriate technologies for the problems.
To protect from outbreak of rodents during bamboo flowering, citrus decline and dyeing of Yongchak (Tree Bean) should be critically examined and appropriate solution should be given to the farmers by the scientist added.
During the function the chief guest release the souvenier of the CAU while minister agriculture release the Farm Megazine and the MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha release the Compendium and Newsletter of the CAU and high yielding variety seeds, chickens etc to the selected farmers.
In the meantime during the inaugural function the governor of Manipur wife Kiran Jagat also inaugurated a flower show during the Agri Fair 2011 at CAU today.
