Alleged torture slur on IRB CO; agitating personnel lay down arms briefly

IMPHAL, April 21: Expressing strong concern over the self made directives against personnel of the 8th IRB (commando battalion) by its commanding officer and initiation of moral and physical torture of some personnel who failed to comply with the directive personnel of the battalion staged an arms down agitation today at the 8th MR Bn attested at 7th MR complex, Kabeishoi this early morning.
Around 300 personnel of the 8th IRB (Commando Battalion) stationed at the at the 7th MR complex came out at their battalion gate and gathered without arms issued to them to gherao the CO of the battalion Nongmeikapam Satrajit, MPS.
According to a personnel from among the agitating lot, the tension started from the recent alleged instruction of the CO which instructed them to collect their monthly salaries from his personal account.
They were further instructed not to take up any forms of development works and file process without any prior knowledge of the CO and that any violation of the said instructions would lead to stern punishment, the source maintained.
The same source further alleged that the personnel of the battalion were frequently exposed to physical and mental harassment for no reason and that the commanding officer N Satrajit has committed immense harassment of the personnel of the battalion by parading them at any time of the day at his own whims.
Meanwhile timely arrival of the DIG Chandramani who is also holding the charge of CO 7th MR at the spot controlled the agitation personnel of the 8th IRB. The DIG further consoled the agitating personnel by assuring them that their grievances and demands will be placed to higher authorities of the state government at the earliest possible.
With this assurance given by the DIG the agitating jawans of 8th IRB returned to their respective barracks and continued with their normal duties around 9 am.
Meanwhile the CO 8th IRB N Satrajit, who soon arrived at the Bn head quarter, Khabeisoi at around 9:15 am without any escorts on his private vehicle was refrained from entering the battalion campus by the personnel.
The personnel of the 8th IRB have further threatened to take mass casual leave if their demand for a new CO was not met by the state government in the nearest future, the personnel echoed.
