Andro government schools at par with private counterparts

IMPHAL April 9: MLA Th Shyamkumar and director of Education (Schools) W Rajen, along with other officials of the department inspected 3 schools within Andro constituency today.

The schools Poirou Khongjin Junior High School, Huikap Junior High School and Moirangpurel Junior High School saw record attendance of students by the inspection team.

It was found that Poirou school had 710 students despite the dilapidated structure of the school building and classes were held at the nearby club as an extension of the school for want of classrooms.

The director voiced surprise and satisfaction on witnessing the student strength of the school. Another 13 additional private teachers were hired separately by the local school committee and with help from MLA Shyamkumar for meeting the requirements of the students.

` At the moment the government schools are deteriorating ,I am extremely pleased to see that the government schools of Andro Kendra are functioning effectively and quality is being maintained at par with other top private schools,` Rajen said.. He further assured that up gradation of Poirou Junior High School to High School status will be considered by the Education department as soon as possible.

Talking to mediapersons MLA Shyamkumar said that the visit of the Education department officials is timely as they have witnessed the real scenario for themselves and felt positive that the schools will be upgraded to high school status within next year.

The MLA lamented the unavailability of text books which should be provided to the students before the beginning of the academic session. He stated that under the Right to Education program certain benefits entitled to the students should be given, but most of the education policies are flawed and unimplemented. He said that along with charity in cash from the school committee and sanction from his Local Area Development Fund, new construction of the school (Poirou Khonjin JBS) is presently underway to accommodate the growing student capacity.

He demanded clarification from the concerned authorities whether text books will actually will be available on time as the academic calendar have already started and that untimely distribution of textbooks is equal to violating the rights of the students.

The MLA also toured other projects within the Andro constituency and was discontented with the size of the community hall under construction at Moirangpurel by the Manipur Development Society. The area of the hall which is 15 by 20 feet is unheard of and responsible authorities need to address the issue, he said.

Further ,Shyamkumar also pointed out that Nongpok Keithelmanbi PHC along with the AYUSH cell was destroyed in a recent earthquake The building was another project of the MDS sans quality.
