IMPHAL, April 23: A convoy of about 45 vehicles carrying various civil society leaders who were heading towards Khongjom War Memorial complex to pay floral tribute to the martyres were reportedly stopped by Manipur Police commandos at Thoubal this morning.
A press meet was held in this connection today at AMUCO office at Kwakeithel, wherein AMUCO president KT. Rahman narrated the incident of police commandos denying movement of civil society leaders upto Kheba Ching at Khongjom.
Condemning high handedness of the police action, Rahman said denying passage of civil society leaders upto Khongjom War Memorial was a denial of the right to pay homage to the martyres who laid down their lives for the motherland.
He said that several team of CSO sponsored by the AMUCO under the banner “Athouba Singna Kathok-ee Imaleibaki Damak”, organised a trip to Khongjom War Memorial complex at Kheba Ching to offer floral tribute to the martyres who laid down their lives in the Anglo-Manipur battle of 1891 but the police commandos stopped the convoy at Thoubal bazaar on the ground that the banner is illegal. Later the convoy were allowed to proceed only after having removed their banners and unecessary detaintion, adds Rahman.
The civil bodies includes KAMA, ZU, AMWVA, PLMPAM, Irabot foundation, AMESCO, AMMDO, Jadonang Memorial Committee etc.
