IMPHAL, April 1: Growing number of irrelevant dams in minor irrigation canal and rivers in Nambol district without proper work order from the concerned department is becoming a concerned for the Nambol constituency, said former Union Minister, Th. Chaoba.
The former Union Minister stated this during an inspection tour in connection with matter.
Further briefing a team of media persons during the tour Th. Chaoba, elaborated that due to increasing number of irrelevant canal dams pave a high chance to flood residential area and paddy fields in the Nambol constituency. The two major rivers Waishelmarin River and Merakhong running through Nambol has always been a concern for the people in the constituency which often trigger floods. Amidst this the growing number dams has doubled the chances and fear of flood for it would become a block to the flow of the rivers.
Chaoba further revealed that the dams are built at a distance of about hundred to two hundreds meters only, pointing out the lack of technical supervision and indicating the irrelevant works taken up for the purpose of financial gain.
The former Minister maintained that he met all the concerned IFCD officials including the chief engineer, commissioner and chief secretary, on how the approval was given for the dams but to his surprise the entire officials were not aware of it.
While informing that the IFCD official had assured to remove the dams, Th. Choaba pointed out the said project usually is meant for hilly region and the project will not give any benefit and also a waste funds.
Th. Chaoba appealed the concerned department to act promptly to avoid any unwanted calamities in the future not only in Nambol but in some part of Imphal.
There are altogether 12 dams of which five dams are at Merakhong, four dams at Waishel River, two dams at Govinda Sena canal and one dams at Lourembam Loukhong canal.
