Many condemns Riha ambush on MLA convoy; demand high level probe

IMPHAL, April 16: Various civil bodies and NGOs have vehemently condemned the Riha ambush laid on the Phungyar Assembly Constituency MLA, Wungnaoshang Keishing killing eight persons including two civilians and six security personnel yesterday.
The Cenrtre for organization Research and Education (CORE) in a statement has expressed its deepest agony on the incident.
It said that the reported ambush was clearly an attempt to assassinate the MLA which has claimed seven lives and injuring five others.
It is a matter of great fortune that the MLA himself survived the deathly ambush. However, the dead of six security staffs, one civilian and injuring others is a deeply lamentable matter, it said.
It recalled that the MLA who is presently at the helm of the Phungyar district demand committee as convener is seeking a separate district to be bifurcated from existing Ukhur district, has been recently in a vulnerable position due to criticism from certain quarters.
Under this vitiated circumstance the attempt to assassinate Keishing leaves many questions unanswered. CORE urges the government of Manipur to immediately institute a judiciary inquiry under a sitting high court judge or CBI inquiry.
The CORE has further urged the government of Manipur to provide adequate compensation and support to the deceased and injured persons while conveying its deepest condolences to the surviving families and wishing a speedy recovery to those who are injured.
The Women Action for Development (WAD) and the Threatened Indigenous Peoples’ Society (TIPS) Manipur and Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long (TAKL) have also in separate statements condemned the incident.
The WAD expressed deep shock at the incident adding it expresses concerned about the women and children who are compelled to be widows and orphans.
It appeals to the insurgent groups to stop killing people and not to repeat such incident in the future and not to make people feel insecure with their daily breath and their daily living. It has also strongly appealed to the state government to pay special attention to the bereaved families.
The TIPS Manipur while strongly condemning the incident termed it as a disregard of human rights and values of the people living in the Phungyar Assembly constituencies.
It urged the concerned party involved in the ambush to give appropriate justification on the motive of the attack. Failure on the part of the concerned perpetrator of the incident would be amount to crime against humanity, anti people, terrorist activities, it maintained.
It further urged the government to take proper initiative in time to uphold the meaning of a democratic government and also urged to induct a high level inquiry to find the facts and figures of the motive and also the perpetrators.
The TAKL said that they condemn the inhuman act in the strongest term and further urged the responsible groups who perpetrated the incident to clarify the motive behind the attack at the earliest possible time and not to repeat the same act.
