Street vendors demand alternative arrangment

IMPHAL, April 28: As a follow up action to their ongoing protest against the recent cabinet decision to shift the street vendors from around the Khwairamband Keithel to Lamphel supermarket, the Khwairamband Street Vendors Coordination Committee organized a meeting at the Manipur Press Club.
Around 500 street vendors gathered at the meeting decrying the cabinet decision and termed the cabinet decision an inhuman decision.
During the meeting, women vendors resolve to demand an alternate arrangement for them and to shift them in the upper floors of the three newly built Ima Keithels which are at present lying vacant. The meeting also resolved to demand seats for the vendors inside the temporary market sheds.
The meeting also demanded the government to revoke the recent cabinet decisions of shifting the vendors to Lamphel and the state government’s plan to construct parking sheds in place of the temporary market sheds.
The vendors further resolved during the meeting to submit the resolutions taken during the meeting to the Chief Minister tomorrow.
Speaking to media persons during the meeting, representatives of the committee stated that the traffic jams suffered by the people in Imphal city is due to the failure of the parking system of the state government and not due to the street vendors.
Meanwhile hearing about the gathering of the women vendors at the Manipur Press Club, a team of state police including women personnel remain guarded at the gate of the club. However there is no report of any untoward incident happening at the venue.
In the meantime it may be mentioned that the Khwairamband Bazar vendors Nupi Yaipha Lup had submitted a memorandum to Governor Gurbacharan Jagat and Chief Minister O Ibobi on the issue of the recent cabinet decision of the state government and the non allotment of seats in the vacant space inside the temporary market shed.
The street vendors had also gheraoed the Imphal Municipal Council building on April 26 regarding the same issue.
