Suspected ambush at Samurou; police driver injured

IMPHAL, April 6 : Women vendors of Samurou Bazar ran helter skelter when sounds of gunfire was heard in the nearby vicinity and the market closed down due to the sudden impact. Police commandos which were on alert duty were fired upon by unidentified persons while conducting routine frisking and checking operations along the Mayang Imphal road stretch.
A driver of commando unit of Wangoi police station sustained minor injuries during the sudden attack by unknown armed miscreant suspected to be militants this evening at around 6:15 pm under wangoi police station in Imphal west District.
According to an official source the incident occurred while the CDO attested at Wangoi police station were returning to their post after completing their assignment of frisking and checking duties. Their vehicle was suddenly attacked by some unidentified armed miscreants on their way by firing some round of gun-shots. The driver of the CDO team made a good escape driving his vehicle to safety but injuring himself in the process.
Instantly the same CDO team returned back to the spot along with additional re-enforcement from the Wangoi police station and conducted immediate spot inquiry this evening during which police recovered some empty cases of .32 ammunitions from the spot where the militants are suspected to have launched their attack.
The injured CDO driver identified as Md Riyas 35, of Yairipok sustained injury at his face and he was evacuated to RIMS hospital for the treatment and is reportedly out of danger.
In connection with the incident, heavy re-enforcement of the security forces from Wangoi police station assisted by additional forces from the Imphal west police station rushed to the spot and carried out extensive search operation at the area to track down the militants.
