Traffic along NH 39 disturbed, cabinet minister expresses resentment over slow investigation

IMPHAL, April 26: A large number of people today blocked a section of the NH-39 along the Mantripukhri stretch and staged a sit in protest demonstration resenting the murder of Leishanthem Roma Devi, 38, w/o L. Nimaichand of Kontha Khabam Ibemcha High School Leirak, who was found dead on April 21.
The demonstrator has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister O Ibobi demanding to book the culprit involved in the killing of Roma within 10 days failing which it has warned to launch certain forms of agitation with the help of like minded civil bodies. 
The protest was organized by the Joint Action committee formed against the killing of Roma and was supported by the bereaved family and a meeting was also held during the demostration.
Meanwhile owing to the protest and the subsequent blocade along the NH, vehicular traffic along the all important highway was disrupted for quite sometime.
A commotion also broke off between a team of the Imphal East District police who came in to disperse the demonstrators from the protest site and clear the road for vehicular traffic.
Meanwhile, Sericulture minister, Y. Irabot, rush in to the scene in a bid to neutralize the situation.
However after much conjoling the protestors shifted their demonstration to another location away from the raod.
The minister expressed his resentment over the slow progress of the investigation of the police so far in the case adding he is very disappointed with the functioning of the present government.
He also added that even though the media has a big role to play during such cases, the prevailing situation in the state has only tied their hands up and as such they are also unable to work freely.
Meanwhile representatives of the JAC expressed that even as the government has been making claims about the improve law and order in the state, the state is reeling under a wave of criminal case against women including rape and killing which is only increasing day by day.
The JAC further expressed that the state needs a good government to ensure safety of the public in the state.
The sit in protest was held jointly by local residents of Khabam, Achanbingei, Luwangsangbam, Lamlongei, Ahallup, Matai and Mantripukhri with support from local clubs at Mantripukhri bazaar.
Meanwhile it may be mentioned that Leishangthem Roma, who was in her 30’s had gone out for Cheiraoba shopping on April 3 but failed to returned home ever since. On April 21 her lifeless body was found in a local canal in a suspicious manner with indications that she had been raped and mugged by the assailant before killing her in cold blood.
The deceased is survived by her husband and two children.
