Agro-climatic condition of state suitable for all kinds of crops: ASSOCHAM

IMPHAL, May 27: ASSOCHAM and the ministry of Food Processing, Government of India had organized a workshop today at ICAR Research Complex, Imphal, Manipur.

According to a release of the ASSOCHAM, Dr. Ombeer Tyagi, director ASSOCHAM in his address outlined the need for organizing this workshop.

He said, `The agro-climatic condition in the state makes it suitable for growing almost all kinds of agricultural and horticultural crops and setting up of food processing industries. Government of India is promoting the food processing sector in the region to utilize its vast potential of raw horticultural produce through its various financial assistance schemes primarily through ministry of Food Processing Industries and agencies like MSME, NHB, APEDA, NABARD, QCI, NHM etc along with the Government of Manipur`.

He further added that `To develop strategic symbiotic synergy between the efforts of the government and the industries, ASSOCHAM in collaboration with the ministry of Food Processing Industries took an initiative to organize this workshop with an aim to reach the budding processed food units in the state of Manipur and make them aware about various assistance plans and schemes of the central/state government`, it added.

It further stated that S.N. Nundy, co-chairman, ASSOCHAM Eastern Region Council delivered the welcome address. In his address he highlighted the constraints in the backward and forward linkages in the food processing sector and call upon the govt. of Manipur to play an important catalytic role in this effort by building partnerships with various central govt. bodies, bankers, financial institutions and technical & management institutions.

According to the statement, in his theme address jt Director, ICAR Dr. Narendra Prakash, threw some light on India`™s position in the global markets and high percentage of wastage of the agricultural produce. He also highlighted the very low level of food processing in India which stood at 6% while in developed countries it is 60-80% and over 30% even in most other Asian, Latin American and other developing countries.

Managing director MANIDCO elaborated on the initiative of the state government of Manipur and requested to organize such workshops in other districts of the state.

Dr. RK Singh from KVK Phek extended a warm vote of thanks to the speakers as well as participants. He also said that the workshop was well received by the enthusiastic Budding entrepreneurs and overall it was very successful and it is a small step for a giant leap. He was sure that the workshop will fulfill its objectives and praised ASSOCHAM for taking such initiative, the release added.
