CII director shows interest in state handloom and Loktak lake

IMPHAL May 2: Commenting on the economic feasibilities that the state can offer, Subha Rajan, director of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) in a press meet held at Hotel Classic today told mediapersons that the state is unique and has tremendous opportunities for promotion of textile business, tourism and other small scale industries.

Subha stated that CII works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the growth of industry in India by partnering industries and government alike through advisory and consultative processes. CII is a non-government, nonprofit, industry led and industry managed organization and founded over 116 years ago, it is India`s premier business association, with a direct membership of over 8100 organisations from the private as well as public sectors, she added.

She further stated that, CII has taken up the agenda of `Business for Livelihood` for the year 2011-12 which converge the fundamental themes of spreading growth to the disadvantaged sections of society, building skills for meeting emerging economic compulsions, and fostering a climate of good governance.

With 64 offices and 7 centre`™s in India, and 7 oversea offices as well as institutional partnerships with 223 counterpart organisations in 90 countries, CII serves as a reference point for Indian industry and the international business community. There are also CII offices at Nagaland, Assam, Mizoram and Tripura, she said.

Subha while recounting her experience in the state for the last few days said that she has visited the handloom industries and interacted with the weavers. `The patterns and quality of the handloom products are world class, the Manipuri women are indeed hardworking, talented and kind, the sector has immense potential and could be expanded for the overall benefit, I will advocate the issue to CII headquarters so hopefully it can be promoted, my superiors might be interested to open a CII office here also`, she said. `The Loktak Lake is one of the most beautiful places I have seen, it has all the ingredients for becoming an international tourist hotspot`, she added.

The CII director after the press meet attended a seminar at Manipur University Senate Hall today on the topic of possible relationship between CII and Manipur. The seminar was chaired by dean of social sciences of the university, Amar Yumnam.
