National team assesses human rights violation victims

IMPHAL, May 18: Taking into account the various complaints lodged by various civil society organizations, individuals and human rights groups operating in the state on different forms of human rights violations committed in the state, a three members official team of the National Human Rights Commission led by SP. Singh, IPS, DIG, National Human Rights Commission has arrived in the state capital on May 16.

According to an official source, the official team of NHRC soon after their arrival at the state capital conducted inspections of residence of reported victims of human rights violation in the greater Imphal areas.

The team further continued with their field visits on May 17 at Ningthoukhong, Toubul, sendra. Ithing, Thanga, Chingkha where there are reports of human rights violations due to the various developmental programmes of the government including the clearing of Phumdis in Loktak Lake, the source mantained.

The team received a first hand report on the various human rights violations by interacting with the local residents of the area during their visit yesterday.

It further stated that the visiting NHRC team today made an official visit to the LDA office at Ningthoukhong and assessed the official works of clearing Phumdis and also visited Phaobakchao Komlakhong Phumdi removal site, Khordak, Ningthoukhong area, Keibul Lamjao National Park.

And finally the visiting members of the NHRC will attend a meeting with the officials of LDA tomorrow and assess the quantum of reported human rights violations which will be caused by the present steps taken up in the Lotak lake by clearing the phumdies in the name of saving the Lake, the official source added.

The team will mainly lay emphasis into the various human rights violations due to the various governmental development schemes and programmes. They will look into the various negative impacts on the indigenous population by the implementation of various developmental projects/schemes which has directly affected the environment in terms of economic sustainability of the population.
