IMPHAL, May 4: Police foiled an attempt of the agitating Khwairamband Nupi Yaipha Lup to submit a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur today.

A large group of women street vendors who have been on an agitating mode today gathered in front of the MPP complex and set out for the Governor`™s official residence. However state police foiled the rally of the vendors by intercepting them before they could reach the Governor`™s Bungalow.

During the process a tussle between the police and protestors took place on the street disrupting traffic for a few minutes.
Later on the police managed to overpower the protestors with the arrival of additional forces.

The protestors were all arrested by the police and are currently lodged in the custody of the city police till filing of this report.

While talking to media persons before the rally, a women protestor disclosed that the demonstration was planed to reiterate the demands of the street vendors to review the recent cabinet decision to allot vending space for street vendors at Lamphel Supert market.

She pointed out that earlier the Governor was apprised of the demand in a memorandum submitted by the women folk however no positive response was on the card. She further urged all the concerned authorities to show sympathy upon the street vendors.

It is worth mentioning that the street vendors had resorted to certain forms of agitation just after a day of the April 25 cabinet decision which announced to ban street vendors from operating around the Khwairamband keithel and to allot an alternative vending space for the vendors at Lamphel.

The vendors have remained restless till date and have been urging the government to review its decision with the opinion that the proposed allocation has a limited market.
