Six including women supporters injured in poll related violence

IMPHAL, May 25: At least six persons including one female were injured during the poll related violence at polling station No. 19/9 Mahabali of Ward No. 19 Yaiskul Assembly constituency, this afternoon around 3.30 pm under Porompat Police station of Imphal East district.
According to a source the incident occurred just after the arrival of a candidate contesting from a BJP ticket for the councilor seat for the Ward No. 19 at the Polling Station 19/9 Mahaballi this evening around 3.30 pm when some local women suspected to be supporters of the Congress candidate scolded the BJP candidate for scattering the dust along the road as he was coming on his Bolero Jeep.
However his supporters, who were present at the station hearing the high tone used by the local women against the candidate came out and confronted the women folk, after which others supporters of the rival candidates joined in. In the ensuing confrontation between the supporters of the two parties six individuals of both the parties, were injured, who were further evacuated to nearby hospitals.
The injured persons identified as Sumitra Kabui 30, Lamta Kabui, Maja Gangpu, Rocky Joshan and Nanao all residents of Mahaballi Kabui village.
The source further mentioned that, as the tense situation was high near the said polling station the security personnel who were deployed at the polling station resorted to blank firing in order to disperse the confronting groups from near the polling stations and finally the confronting groups dispersed from the scene this afternoon at around 3.45 pm.
According to the source the entire poll process in the said polling station ended just before the official 4 pm after one of the polling officer deputed at the said poling station suggested to the inner agents of the various candidates present inside the said stations late this afternoon.
In the meantime, RK Bina Devi a contesting congress candidate of Ward 19 has reportedly lodged an FIR with the Porompat Police late this evening in connection with the incident, which has resulted in local meira paibis surrounding the Wangkhei residence of the BJP candidate and protecting him against arrest attempts of the police, the reliable source added.
In yet another poll related violence the entire process of poll at the Polling station of Meisnam Nongthombam Leikai of Ward 8 under Sagolband Assembly Constituency was suspended around noon following hot arguments between inner agents of BJP and Congress parties over proxy votes.
Polling in the said station however ended around noon after an agreement was brought between the various inner agents present inside the polling station. However it may be mentioned that around 75% of voters had already cast their votes by the time polling ended in the said station, according to an unofficial source.
