State facing problems for long asserts PC Lawmkunga

IMPHAL May 6: Since the 1950’s, the state has been facing many problems even though the government has initiated and implemented many schemes and projects for save guarding our natural forest resources said PC Lawmkunga, IAS, addl. chief secretary, Forest and environment, Govt. of Manipur in his speech as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the one day workshop held at the main conference hall of Forest Department Headquaters, Sanjenthong, today.
He also expressed his concern that the initiatives and projects taken up by the government would be wasted if misuse and over exploitations of forest resources were not checked by the concerned Department. He added that the government would not overlook any issues of encroachment at any forest sanctuaries.
The One day State level Workshop on Institutionalization of Sustainable Management of Natural Forests: Criteria and Indicator Approach was held in collaboration with Forest Department, Government of Manipur and Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), Bhopal .The other dignitaries of the inaugural function were Dr. R.B. Lal, director, IIFM, Bhopal as the president and A. Kharshiing, IFS, principal chief conservator of Forest as the guest of honour respectively.
Criteria and Indicators is a mechanism for assessing progress towards sustainable management of forest resources. The C&I was developed during the UN conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Jeneiro in 1992.
 The workshop was attended by various officers of Forest Dept, staff members and representatives of IIFM, Bhopal.
